Vengayam dhaniya chutney / Onion coriander seeds chutney

Vengayam dhaniya chutney is a spicy tangy delicious traditional south Indian chutney variety. This chutney is very different as we saute onion and coriander seeds( which is a rare combination in chutney) along with garlic, red chillies and tamarind and grind it to a fine paste and again cook the paste in gingelly oil.It is super spicy and goes well with idli, dosa,Pongal, poori, chapati etc. Check out the recipe below.

Ingredients

Onion -6 nos chopped roughly
Dhaniya ( coriander seeds)-2 tbsps
Garlic -6-8 cloves
Red chillies -10-15 nos
Tamarind small gooseberry sized
Salt to taste
Fenugreek seeds -1/4 tsp
Mustard seeds-1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds -1/2 tsp
Curry leaves few
Gingelly oil -2 tbsps

Method

👉Heat 1 tsp oil in a kadai add coriander seeds, garlic, fenugreek and red chillies and sauté well. Remove from fire and transfer to the mixie jar and powder it first before adding onions.

👉Then in the same oil sauté the onions until they become soft. Add to the mixie jar along with tamarind and salt and grind everything together to a smooth paste.

👉Heat the remaining oil in a kadai add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, curry leaves and allow it to splutter. Pour the ground paste. Add little water and cook the mixture until raw smell goes and thickens to chutney consistency.

👉Serve with idli, dosa,pongal etc.

✍️Always serve this chutney with a drizzle of gingelly oil.
